How is A Parish’s Fruitful Harvest Goal Calculated?

A parish’s goal is determined by its size and offertory income relative to the entire Local Church.  The parish goal is determined by two criteria: (1) the number of families as a percentage of the total number of families in the Local Church, and (2) the parish offertory income as a percentage of the total offertory income of the Local Church.  A 45% weighting is applied to the number of families, and a 55% weighting is applied to the parish offertory income in order to arrive at the parish goal for a particular campaign.  Here is an example of the calculation for a parish with 340 families and $500,000 per year offertory in an $9.8 million appeal.

Example of How the Goals Are Calculated

1. Parish Goal if based on Number of Families Alone:

   340 (# Families in Parish) / 34,000 (# Families in Diocese) = 1%
   1% x $9,800,000 (Fruitful Harvest Appeal Goal) = $98,000 (Goal if Based on Number of Families Only)

2. Parish Goal if Based on Offertory Income Alone:

   $500,000 (Parish Offertory income) / $25,000,000 (Diocesan Offertory Income) = 2%
   2% x $9,800,000 (Fruitful Harvest Appeal Goal) = $196,000 (Goal if Based on Offertory Income Only)

3. The Fruitful Harvest Goal Weighs # of Families at 45% and Offertory Income at 55%:

   $ 98,000 x .45 = $  44,100
   $196,000 x .55 = $107,800
   $151,900 (Parish Fruitful Harvest Goal)

What Does it Mean That 90% of the Goal Must Be Guaranteed? Examples Below:

• A 10% rebate to each parish is included in the overall Fruitful Harvest Appeal goal based on the figures in these calculations. Therefore, of that amount, $980,000 is budgeted for the 10%rebates. The remaining $8,820,000 represents that portion of the 2-year operating budget of the Local Church to be funded by Fruitful Harvest, and it is this amount, which parishes are guaranteeing.
• Campaign policy continues to require that a parish achieve 100% of goal in paid pledges in order to receive a 10% rebate.

When Are Rebates and Overage Amounts Paid?

• When a parish reaches goal in paid pledges, a 10% rebate is issued on the 15th day of the next month. For all parishes except “dovetail” parishes, the overage payments are made at the kickoff of the next biennial campaign, usually in mid-August of even-numbered years. The final payment of any additional overage is paid at the conclusion of the current appeal. Fruitful Harvest officially concludes on August 31st of every even numbered year.

Do Parishes Receive Any Overage Returns Once Their Goal is Paid?

• Once the parish reaches 100% of their parish goal paid, the parish will receive a 10% rebate in return. Any amount over 100% of the parish goal paid will be paid back to the parish at 50% and if the parish has a school, an additional 42% will be paid back to the school. A parish with a school could stand to receive an additional 92% on anything over 100% of their paid goal.

Can Our Parish Run A Capital Campaign Concurrently With Fruitful Harvest?

• In order to conduct a concurrent capital campaign, a parish must apply for “dovetail” status. The application should be directed to the Office for Stewardship and Development before the commencement of the biennial appeal, should be submitted before March 31st of every even numbered year.
• Dovetail parishes do not receive the 10% rebate. Once the parish Fruitful Harvest goal is met they will receive 100% of any amount over their Fruitful Harvest goal. These overages will be paid quarterly on the 15th of the following month.
